Spring 2012 Guest Speaker Tara Smith

The Center for Ethics and Entrepreneurship welcomes Professor Tara Smith to Rockford University on Tuesday, April 17. Dr. Smith will talk on themes related to her essay Money Can Buy Happiness.

Professor Smith received her Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University and is currently Professor of Philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin.

She is the author of several books in moral and political philosophy, including Moral Rights and Political Freedom, Viable Values: A Study of Life as the Root and Reward of Morality, and Ayn Rand’s Normative Ethics: The Virtuous Egoist.

The talk will be at 11:00 am in the Starr Science Auditorium (STARR 102) on the Rockford University campus.

Profiles in Liberty: Douglas B. Rasmussen

In an extended interview, philosopher Douglas B. Rasmussen responds to a series of questions about his life and work.

Dr. Rasmussen is a professor of philosophy at St. John’s University in New York. In addition to the books discussed in the interview, he is the author of articles in American Philosophical Quarterly, The Review of Metaphysics, International Philosophical Quarterly, and many scholarly anthologies.

Fall 2011 Guest Speakers Federico Fernandez and Martin Sarano

The Center for Ethics and Entrepreneurship welcomes Federico Fernández and Martin Sarano to Rockford University this Thursday, October 13, from 11 am to 12:15 pm, in Scarborough 208. Fernández and Sarano will give a joint lecture entitled “Doing Business in Argentina: The current business climate and the ethical dilemmas it presents to entrepreneurs and corporations.”

Federico N. Fernández and Martin Sarano are the co-founders of Bases Foundation, a non-for-profit organization devoted to foster awareness and promote the benefits that individual freedoms bring to society. Mr. Fernández (President of Bases Foundation) is currently editing a book on Karl R. Popper which will be published in 2012. Mr. Sarano (Vice President of Bases Foundation) is a Chicago Booth MBA student and has worked in different corporate and consulting roles in various industries.

Fall 2011 Guest Speaker Phyllis Johnson

The Center for Ethics and Entrepreneurship welcomes Phyllis Johnson to Rockford University this Thursday, October 6, from 11 am to 12:15 pm, in Scarborough 208. Ms. Johnson will give a talk entitled “Making a Living While Making a Difference.”

Phyllis Johnson is co-founder and president of the Rockford-based BD Imports, a supplier of exceptional quality specialty grade coffees and owner of Evolution Coffee. The company imports un-roasted coffee from sustainable sources in coffee producing countries and markets to roaster retailers and wholesalers located in the United States, Canada, Japan, and Taiwan. BD Imports has helped to propel Phyllis as a champion of women and women in coffee.

The Center for Ethics and Entrepreneurship welcomes Dr. Alexei Marcoux to Rockford University this Thursday, September 29, from 11 am to 12:15 pm, in Scarborough 208. Dr. Marcoux will give a talk on moral partiality in business practice.

Alexei Marcoux is Associate Professor of Business Ethics in the School of Business Administration at Loyola University Chicago, Senior Research Fellow in the Center for Spiritual Capital at Loyola University New Orleans, and Policy Advisor to the Heartland Institute. His research and teaching in business ethics focus on the moral contours of commercial transactions and the role of partiality in ethical business practice.

Dr. Al Gini is a Professor of Business Ethics and Chair of the Department of Management in the School of Business Administration at Loyola University Chicago. He is also the cofounder and Associate Editor of Business Ethics Quarterly, the journal of the Society for Business Ethics. His books include: My Job My Self: Work and the Creation of the Modern Individual (Routledge, 2000); The Importance of Being Lazy: In Praise of Play, Leisure and Vacations (Routledge, 2003); Why It’s Hard to Be Good (Routledge, 2006); Seeking The Truth of Things (ACTA, 2010).

Dr. David R. Henderson is an associate professor of economics at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California and a research fellow with Stanford University’s Hoover Institution. He is the author of The Joy of Freedom: An Economist’s Odyssey and the editor of The Concise Encyclopedia of Economics. He was previously a senior economist with the President’s Council of Economic Advisers and has testified before House and Senate congressional committees. He has also appeared on CNN, The O’Reilly Factor, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, and C-SPAN.

The Future of Capitalism Series on Big Think

Last week, Big Think started a ten day series on the future of capitalism. Through articles and videos, the series examines the impact on capitalism of technologies such as 3D printing, virtual products and currencies, data analysis, and the relationship between governments and markets. Also featured is an interview with John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods and co-founder of Conscious Capitalism with recent CEE guest speaker Michael Strong.

Michael Strong and Magatte Wade, CEE’s final Fall 2010 Guest Speakers, discuss with Dr. Stephen Hicks the social and lifestyle benefits of entrepreneurship, as well as what type of society best promotes entrepreneurship. Mr. Strong and Ms. Wade gave talks in conjunction with Dr. Hicks’s Business and Economic Ethics class.
