Philosophy and Film Series: Groundhog Day

The Philosophy and Film Series presents a discussion of the 1993 film Groundhog Day.

Join Professors Matt Flamm and Shawn Klein on February 4th, from 4 to 5pm in the CEE office (on the 2nd floor of Burpee, to the right of the cafeteria entrance).

Light refreshments will be provided. All members of the campus community may attend.

Spring Semester CEE News

The Center for Ethics and Entrepreneurship has started another busy semester! Here is an update on some of our activities since the start of the new year:

We have our first Guest Speaker of the semester, Professor Arielle John, visiting next week (more details Monday).

Professor Shawn Klein has provided his thoughts on sports ethics and the Lance Armstrong confession to various media outlets, including CNN, Coach and Athletic Director Magazine, WREX 13 News, and CKNW Morning News (Search January 18 on the 6 a.m. hour; Dr. Klein’s segments are around the 10 minute and 20 minute marks).

Professor Stephen Hicks gave lectures in Porto Alegre, Brazil, Panama City, Panama, and Houston, Texas, was interviewed for the Cosmoetica blog, and appeared on David Hutzelman’s Public Affairs Public Access TV program (The full interview video is embedded below).

Blade Runner Screening and Discussion October 11

The Philosophy and Film Series presents the 1982 science fiction classic Blade Runner, starring Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, and Sean Young. Professors Shawn Klein and Matt Flamm will host a screening of the film and a discussion of its philosophical themes.

Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization National Conference in Chicago

Shawn Klein Interviewed by The New York Times

CEE Professor Shawn Klein was interviewed by another major publication, The New York Times, on sports ethics. The article discusses bending the rules in sports, and whether an athlete who has attained sports excellence has necessarily attained moral excellence.

Shawn Klein on the Ousted Olympic Badminton Players

Bloomberg interviewed CEE professor Shawn Klein on the recent badminton scandal at the Olympics. Four players were disqualified for losing on purpose, which they apparently did in order to play against weaker opponents in future matches, increasing their chances at winning a medal. “You have to play hard, you can’t just mail it in,” [Dr. Klein] said in a telephone interview. “But as I think about it more and what sports is, rules of the game and good sportsmanship, I started wondering when is it appropriate to kick them out of the game and is it really that wrong?”

Professor Stephen Hicks Visits Universidad Francisco Marroquín in Guatemala

Dr. Stephen Hicks, CEE’s Executive Director, was invited last month to the Universidad Francisco Marroquín in Guatemala to give a series of lectures on business ethics and political economy. Rockford University Students: See Atlas Shrugged — Free!

Rockford University students can see the new Atlas Shrugged movie on Saturday, May 7 at 7:15 PM for free, courtesy of the Center for Ethics and Entrepreneurship. We are only covering the tickets, not concessions or transportation. 

The film is playing at Wildwood Theaters in Janesville, Wisconsin.
