Self Employment in the Arts (SEA) is an organization dedicated to helping “…artists succeed at becoming an artist through conferences, workshops, and [their] website full of resources and articles.” SEA will be holding a conference on February 24 and 25 in Lisle, Illinois. Session topics include self-publishing, finding clients, using social media, and making a business plan.

CEE Professor Shawn Klein announced a call for abstracts for the First Annual Rockford College Sports Studies Symposium on his Who Needs Philosophy blog. From the announcement:

Call for Abstracts

1st Annual Rockford College Sports Studies Symposium:
An interdisciplinary conference on the study of Sport.

Whether one is a participant, a casual spectator, a die-hard fan, or a critic, sport, in all its varieties and forms, play a significant role in the lives of most people through out the world. Sports and competitions have long been a part of human civilization and raise a wide range of important philosophical and ethical issues.

This symposium will bring together a panel of scholars to discuss philosophical themes or issues arising in the study of Sport. The focus of the panel will depend, in part, on the submitted abstracts. Each presenter on a panel will have 20 minutes for their presentation. This will be followed by 10-15 minutes for panelists to respond to each other and then 15 minutes or more for audience Q&A. There will also be a panel on the Rhetoric of Sport.

Abstract Submission:
Submissions are welcome on any philosophical theme or issue arising in the study of Sport. Abstract should be 300-500 words. Send via email (as PDF) to sklein_at_rockford_dot_edu.

Global Entrepreneurship Week 2011

This year’s Global Entrepreneurship Week will take place from November 14 – 20. Last year, over 400,000 Americans participated in all 50 states. GEW promotes innovation, creativity, job creation, and economic growth through a variety of activities, which include: a competition to find the 50 most promising startups worldwide; a clean technology competition; a competition to win a free yearlong trip around the world; and Startup Weekend, a networking event focused on creating new startups.

2010 Upton Forum at Beloit College, Featuring Israel Kirzner

The 3rd Annual Miller Upton Forum starts today at Beloit College. The theme is “The Wealth and Well-Being of Nations.” Today the forum features a panel discussion on Entrepreneurship and the Liberal Arts in Practice from 12:30-2:00 p.m, and a speech tomorrow, October 27th, by noted economist Israel Kirzner. Dr. Kirzner is professor emeritus of economics at New York University, a leading proponent of the Austrian School of economics, and winner of the 2006 Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research.

Professor Hicks speaks at three recent conferences

Dr. Stephen Hicks was invited to speak at three conferences over the past few months. In September, he was a special guest speaker at the Fiserv Connect Forum in Orlando, Florida, where he discussed “Innovation, Ethics, and ‘Creative Destruction.’” In July, he delivered two lectures on “Capitalism and Art in Contemporary America” at The Atlas Society’s summer seminar in Portland, Oregon. And in June he gave a talk on “The Role of Outside Donors in the College Curriculum,” at the International Association for Business and Society’s 2008 conference in Tampere, Finland.

Philosophy Professor Matt Flamm, author of the essay on George Santayana in the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy and co-editor of Under Whatever Sky—Contemporary Readings of George Santayana, will be speaking in Indianapolis on “The Impious Naturalism of the New Atheists.” The conference is sponsored by the Santayana Seminar Series and The Institute for American Thought.

Professor Klein to speak on Harry Potter at conference

Philosophy Professor Shawn Klein, co-editor of Harry Potter and Philosophy, will be speaking at a colloquium at Tufts University in Massachusetts, his alma mater, on the theme Why Take Harry Seriously?
