Bill Bernbach, probably the greatest ad man who ever lived, once said that an effective ad "makes the strange familiar, and the familiar strange."

This wisdom is expressed in Mr. O'Connor's comment "we couched everything in traditional advertising terms, whereas our competitors tended to make up stuff, which really alienated their potential customers." Since what he was selling was new (strange) he couched it in traditional language (familiar). His competitors on the other hand took something strange and made it strange, giving customers nothing familiar to hang on to.

Please pass this comment on to Mr. O'Connor. He should be pleased to know that he is in very good company.

Sincerely,
Cynthia Gillis
